Honoring

Kenneth Koch

Award accepted by Karen Koch

and

Luis Jaramillo

We're delighted to honor Kenneth Koch and Luis Jaramillo, two writers who have made exemplary contributions to Teachers & Writers Collaborative and our mission to increase access to the literary arts.

About the honorees

Kenneth Koch published many volumes of poetry, most recently A Possible World and New Addresses. His short plays, many of them produced off-and off-off-Broadway, are collected in The Gold Standard: A Book of Plays and One Thousand Avant-Garde Plays. He also wrote several books about poetry, including Wishes, Lies, and Dreams; Rose, Where Did You Get That Red?; and Making Your Own Days: The Pleasures of Reading and Writing Poetry. His fiction is brought together in Collected Fiction. He was the winner of the Bollingen Prize (1995) and the Bobbitt Library of Congress Poetry Prize (1996), a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize (1995) and the National Book Award (2000), and winner of the first annual Phi Betta Kappa Poetry Award (2001). A pioneer writer-in-the-schools with Teachers & Writers Collaborative, his books and ideas about writing with children have been fundamental to the field of literary arts education. Kenneth Koch lived with his wife, Karen, in New York City and taught at Columbia University. He died in 2002.

Luis Jaramillo is the author of The Witches of El Paso. He is also the author of the award-winning short story collection The Doctor’s Wife. His writing has appeared in Literary Hub, BOMB Magazine, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and other publications. His honors include fellowships from Aspen Words, the Sewanee Writers Conference, and the New York Institute for the Humanities. He is an assistant professor of creative writing at The New School. He received an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and an MFA in creative writing from The New School.

About Teachers & Writers Collaborative

Teachers & Writers Collaborative is one of the first writers-in-the-schools programs, with a 50+ year history of delivering innovative creative writing programs that increase access to the arts, build community, and amplify youth voices. Founded in 1967 by a group of writers and educators who believed that professional writers could make a unique contribution to the teaching of writing and literature. Those responsible for shaping T&W’s program and philosophy in the organization’s early years included June Jordan, Rosellen Brown, Victor Hernández Cruz, Kenneth Koch, Herbert Kohl, Phillip Lopate, Grace Paley, Muriel Rukeyser, and Anne Sexton, among others.

T&W programs include: writing workshops for youth, art workshops for seniors, and training for teachers. In addition, T&W hosts the NY Poetry Out Loud recitation competition and the NY Youth Poet Laureate program for teens in New York State. To support the teaching of creative writing, we publish Teachers & Writers Magazine and an assortment of books for educators. Learn more about our programs at twc.org.

Since its founding, T&W has published more than 80 books about teaching writing. T&W writers have brought writing residencies and professional development workshops to hundreds of thousands of students and tens of thousands of teachers in New York City schools. This depth of experience led the National Endowment for the Arts to call T&W the arts education group that is “most familiar with creative writing/literature in primary and secondary schools.”
